Wizard Costume

 

Tunic

Size 104 – 122, Sized for 4 - 7 year olds

Supplies:

  •   1.4 m Benartex yellow print cotton fabric  
  •   0.25 m Benartex brown print cotton fabric
  •   0.25 m open-weave scrim fabric
  •   Sewing and embroidery thread to match the fabrics
  •   Embroidery stabilizer and temporary spray adhesive
  •   OESD embroidery design #NV720
  •   Trim in orange, yellow and brown
  •   BERNINA 580
 Cut
1 x front tunic piece (on the fold)
1 x back tunic piece (on the fold)
3x outer facing (on the fold) 1x from scrim and 2x from brown cotton fabric
3x inner facing (on the fold) 1x from scrim and 2x from brown cotton fabric
 
 
Instructions
1.    Layer embroidery stabilizer under the front tunic piece using temporary spray adhesive. Stitch the embroidery design on the front center of the tunic, approximately 3.5 cm below the slit.

Shoulder seams / facings
For the outer facing, the scrim is backed with a cotton piece and both pieces are assimilated.
2.    Sew the shoulder seams of the tunic as well as the outer and inner facings.
3.    With the right sides together, overturn the outer facing on the tunic. Iron the seam allowances in the facings.
4.    With the right sides together, place the inner facing on the outer facing. Sew together along the neckline and turn inward. Topstitch from the right side.

Complete the tunic
5.    Turn up the sleeve hems twice and topstitch close to the edge.
6.    Stitch the trim around the facing on the scrim.

Pants

Size 104 – 122, Sized for 4 - 7 year olds

Supplies:

  •   0.9 m Benartex dark brown print cotton fabric
  •   Remnants of the Benartex green print cotton fabric
  •   1 m satin ribbon, orange
  •   Elastic (finished width 54-60 cm)
  •   Sewing and embroidery thread to match the fabrics
  •   BERNINA 580
  Cut
2x pants pieces
 
 
Instructions
1.     For fabric bands around the lower pant leg, cut strips from the green fabric (finished width about 3 cm), press under the lengthwise edges. Sew at a distance of approximately 4 cm to the hem on the pants piece and sew on the satin ribbons slightly above that.
2.     Sew the inner leg seams, right sides together.
3.     With the right sides together, pull the pants legs into one another and sew the center seam. Fold the waistline inwards along the break line, press under the lower edge and sew along the edge to form a casing. Leave approximately 3 cm open in the center back for inserting the elastic.
4.     Insert the elastic, adjust for waist size, lay the ends over one another and sew together. Stitch up the open spot.
5.     Hem the pants.

Belt

Finished length 64 cm (can be adjusted depending on the size)

Supplies:

  •   Fabric remnants in brown and beige
  •   Open weave scrim remnants
  •   Velcro, 4 cm (2 cm wide)
  •   2.30 m bias tape
  •   Fleur de lis embroidery appliqué design
  •   Embroidery stabilizer and temporary spray adhesive
  •   Sewing and embroidery thread to match the fabrics
  •   BERNINA 580
 
 
TIP:  if no matching bias tape is available, simply cut bias strips from same material as the belt piece and sew on with the BERNINA Binder Attachment #88 with Foot #95 (see instructions included with the foot).
 

 
Cut (seam allowances must be added)
7x rectangles 17 x 9 cm
1 belt piece 6 x 69 cm 
 
 
 
Instructions
1.    With the right sides together, lay each scrim rectangle on a rectangle made of the brown fabric. Sew together the bottom edge and turn on the right side.
2.    Layer embroidery stabilizer under the rectangles using temporary spray adhesive. Embroider the fleur de lis appliqué on each rectangle.
3.    Enclose the lengthwise edges of the rectangles with the bias tape turning under the bias tape on the lower edge.
4.    Fold the belt piece in half lengthwise with the right sides on the inside. Sew the narrow sides together. Turn on the right side and press in half lengthwise along the fold.
5.    Press under the seam allowances of the lengthwise edges and slide the rectangles evenly distributed between the belt pieces. Sew together the belt piece while incorporating the rectangles.
6.    Sew on the Velcro to close the belt.

Wizard hat

Size 54 cm

Supplies:

  •   0.3 thick felt, grey (80 cm wide)
  •   Open weave scrim fabric remnants, gold and silver colors
  •   Various satin ribbons, strips of fabric and feathers for decoration
  •   Multi-color thread, e.g. Metter "silk finish" in yellow and brown tones
  •   BERNINA 580
  •   Edgestitch Foot #10

Cut (seam allowances must be added)
 
2 x hat, where each lower edge is 27.5 cm long
1 x circle for brim: Inner circle diameter 18 cm, (add seam allowances)
Outer circle diameter approximately 37 cm
2 scrim strips approximately 17 x 57 cm.
 
Instructions
1.    With the left sides together, lay the hat crown halves together and sew with Edgestitch Foot #10 (with narrow edges) using the triple straight stitch.
2.    Close the scrim for the decorative banding, place it over the hat crown and sew to the lower edge.
3.    Decorate the outer edge of the hat brim with the triple zigzag stitch. With the right sides together, attach the inner edge of the brim to the lower edge of the crown, and stitch.
4.    If desired, attach the strips of fabric, ribbons and feathers to the scrim.

Gauntlets

Supplies:

  •   0.4 m Benartex green cotton print fabric
  •   Various fabric strips in different colors
  •   0.85 m elastic band
  •   Sewing thread to match the fabrics
  •   BERNINA 580

Cut (seam allowances must be added)

2 x gauntlet pieces

 
Instructions
1.     From the remnants of fabric, cut strips of various lengths and widths.
2.     Lay the strips on the right side of the gauntlet arm (lengthwise) seam. The cut edges are to lay flush with each other and the strips lay toward the inside. Machine baste.
3.     Lay the right sides of the arm seams together with the strips such that the loose ends will not be sewn in. Close the arm seam and turn on the right side.
4.     On each end, make a casing for the elastic by folding over the hem line twice. Sew along the double-folded edge leaving a small opening for inserting the elastic. Insert the elastic, adjust to the correct length and sew the elastic ends together. Stitch the casing opening close.

Cape

Supplies:

  •   Each 1.4 m open weave scrim fabric, tulle in dark green and gold (1.1m wide)
  •   Remnant of artificial leather, gold for the application
  •   OESD Embroidery Design #NV 928
  •   Remnant of grey felt, 3mm thick
  •   Embroidery stabilizer and temporary spray adhesive
  •   Wonder Tape
  •   Sewing and embroidery thread to match the fabrics
  •   BERNINA 580
  •   0.9 m satin ribbon, yellow
 


Cut (seam allowances must not be included)
 

Cape piece each 1 x from the scrim, gold tulle and dark green tulle


Instructions
1.     Underlay the scrim fabric with the dark green tulle. These two materials will be assimilated. With the wrong sides together, lay these pieces on the gold tulle and sew together along the edges.
2.     Enclose the neckline edge (including the slit) with a bias tape made from green cotton fabric.
3.     Cut the fleur de lis design from the gold artificial leather and apply to the back of the cape using the Wonder Tape. Sew in place with narrow stitches.
4.     Stitch the embroidery design twice on the grey felt. Cut out the embroidered circles and attach to the front of the cape as decoration. To attach the cape, slide the satin ribbon under the circles on both sides toward the front center. Sew on the circles while also sewing on the satin ribbon.
