Hello my Sewing Bees, in today's lesson I'm going to show you how to turn a five-petal flower into an appliqué with the BERNINA Embroidery Software 9. You’ll need DesignerPlus for this project. Let's have some fun!
We use the YouTube service to display videos. This service may collect data about your activities. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy. To view the video, please accept "Targeting cookies."
Download the artwork for this lesson. Save the flower file to a folder in your Embroidery Library. Remember its location.
To start a new design, open the BERNINA Embroidery Software 9. Switch to "Embroidery Canvas" from the Home Screen. Click the hoop symbol on the top right to display the hoop.
Change hoop to the Medium size: > Right click on "Show Hoop/Settings"
Choose Hoop drop down menu > BERNINA Medium Hoop, 130x100 Make sure Show Hoop is checked. Click "OK".
Open the "Auto-Digitize" Toolbox, select > Insert Artwork
Navigate to the location you have saved your flower artwork. > Select Flower.jpg > Click "Open"
With the artwork selected, enter 3” in the width box. Typing the inch mark in the box will automatically size the artwork in inches rather than mm. Because proportional lock is selected by default, the artwork will size proportionally. Press the key "Enter" to apply.
In the "Auto-Digitize" Toolbox, select > Instant Auto-Digitize
Deselect, then select only the flower petals part of the design. Then open the "Edit" Toolbox and click: > Remove Holes
With the petals selected, select the center of the flower also by holding down the "Ctrl" key and then clicking the circle shape. Open the "Appliqué" Toolbox and select: > Convert to Appliqué
Next, choose a fabric for your flower: > Select only the flower petals part > Select Object Properties
Select the "Appliqué" Tab and click on Appliqué Fabric.
Choose whichever fabric you’d like. To select the fabric shown here, click the small “+” next to “Benartex”, then the small “+” next to “Apple Butter”. Select the pink fabric 568-8 (hovering over the fabric will reveal its name). Select "OK" to set.
Activate Show Appliqué Fabric.
Choose fabric for flower center by selecting only the flower center part (you will need to deselect the petals first), and then following the steps above, starting from the title "Choosing appliqué fabric". For our sample, I chose Benartex > Authentic Documentaries > 433-1
Save your design. > File > Save As… > Flower Applique.ART90
Export to a USB or send the design to your machine via BERNINA WiFi Device. Check Lesson One if you need a reminder of how to transfer your file to your machine.
Are you ready for the next lesson? I will show you how to create and edit Lettering!
