Kliptown Youth Centre

We are delighted to share the heartening progress made by the five enthusiastic participants of the "Woman with Vision" Sewing Project from the Kliptown Youth Centre. Over the course of a transformative 5-day training covering Craft Sewing and Machine Techniques, hosted by BERNINA RSA, these ladies exhibited not only their eagerness to learn but also their commitment to mastering the art of craft sewing

This empowering opportunity was made possible through the generous sponsorship of a kind-hearted lady from America. Having visited the Kliptown Youth Centre during her time in South Africa, she took it upon herself to support the project. Her donation made it possible for the project to acquire six bernette Sew & Go 5 sewing machines and two Nina overlocking machines

The first day of the course was dedicated to intensive product training, ensuring that the participants became intimately familiar with the tools at their disposal. The subsequent days were filled with creativity and skill-building as the women successfully crafted high-quality items designed to be sold with confidence.

Their accomplishments during the week included the completion of a backpack, a tote wine bag capable of holding three bottles, a small cross-over sling bag with two zips, and a stylish sun hat. Additionally, the participants had the opportunity to personalize a T-shirt through the art of appliqué, learning to add both lettering and motifs to their creations.

An integral aspect of their success lies in the collaboration with the Kliptown Youth Centre. The Centre purchases the items produced by the sewing project, allowing the women to showcase and sell their products to visitors, including international tourists. This arrangement not only provides a market for their creations but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.

The participants expressed immense satisfaction and pride in their achievements, relishing the opportunity to apply a variety of techniques to their creations. The week concluded with a sense of accomplishment as they received well-deserved certificates for their hard work and dedication

As we reflect on this experience, it is evident that the ladies of the "Woman with Vision" Sewing Project are determined to turn their skills into a successful enterprise. Their eagerness to learn and commitment to the project are truly inspiring, making it a pleasure to share knowledge with individuals who are not only receptive but also driven to succeed

We look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of the "Woman with Vision" Sewing Project at the Kliptown Youth Centre, and we extend our gratitude to all those who have contributed to making this initiative a reality.
